Chair, Board of Directors FY22
PIH Health, Inc.

Welcome to PIH Health’s Fiscal Year (FY) 2022 Annual Report. We’re pleased to present the highlights of PIH Health’s ongoing dedication to a high standard of healthcare delivery and share the many ways we have expanded our services as the community’s health and wellness partner.

Over the past year, COVID-19 has been normalized into our daily operations, and we have renewed our commitment to our mission by advancing the health and well-being of the communities we serve. We’ve adapted to the changes in the healthcare landscape and continue to grow, improve, and flourish as a nationally recognized health system.

Our commitment to delivering exceptional care and value to our patients continues to drive PIH Health’s strategic initiatives. We’ve expanded our network of services through the addition of many primary care and specialty physicians. We’ve also opened our seventh Urgent Care Center, just west of downtown Los Angeles. Our home health post-acute services have also expanded, extending into the downtown Los Angeles community and San Bernardino County.

PIH Health has continued to invest in medical technologies that advance the way we provide care, including offering the latest in robotic surgery—the Da Vinci Xi and ROSA surgical systems were installed. These innovations offer our patients less invasive options, maximum precision and accuracy, shorter procedure times, faster recovery, and better outcomes.

PIH Health Good Samaritan Hospital reached another milestone in its integration into our organization, as its medical software systems were updated to mirror those used across the enterprise, helping to ensure coordinated delivery of care systemwide. Additionally, PIH Health Good Samaritan Hospital was named 2022 CHIME Digital Health Most Wired recipient by the college of Healthcare Information Management Executives for the first time, joining PIH Health Whittier Hospital (ninth year) and PIH Health Downey Hospital (fifth year) in this prestigious recognition.

Through the generosity and continued support of our community, more than $6.2 million was raised by the PIH Health Foundation to fund technological advancements like the Da Vinci Surgical System, new ultrasound machines to support the Cardiac Catherization Lab and Breast Center teams, 3D mammography for PIH Health Good Samaritan Hospital, and other updated equipment and tools to refine our programs for better patient care. We’ve continued the renovations and investment into PIH Health facilities and infrastructure to improve the patient experience and employee satisfaction, creating an environment of outstanding service and a culture of excellence.

The 2022 Community Health Needs Assessment reports were completed in September. These reports provided a deeper understanding of the needs in our newest community surrounding downtown Los Angeles, and allowed us to take a fresh look at the data and community feedback for the Whittier and Downey service areas so we can better meet the healthcare needs of our ever changing communities.

As we look ahead, we remain focused on growth and continue to expand our services to provide the care the community has come to expect from PIH Health—transformative care that improves lives and contributes to a healthier future.

Highlights

Over the past year, much has transpired for PIH Health as an organization.
Following are some of the highlights from Fiscal Year 2022.

Hospital and Health System Achievements

PIH Health Named One of 15 Top Health Systems in the Nation

In July 2022, PIH Health was named one of the nation’s 15 Top Health Systems by Merative™ (formerly IBM Watson Health™). This is the second time PIH Health has been recognized with this honor. In the annual list published by Fortune, PIH Health placed as one of the top five medium-sized healthcare systems in the nation and is the only health provider in Los Angeles County to be included. In addition, PIH Health Whittier Hospital was included on the Fortune/Merative 100 Top Hospitals list for the seventh time, placing among the 25 top teaching hospitals. Merative evaluated 349 health systems and 3,206 member hospitals to identify the 15 U.S. health systems and 100 hospitals with the highest overall achievement.

“PIH Health is honored to receive these prestigious recognitions once again,” said James R. West, PIH Health president and chief executive officer. “These awards exemplify our continuous commitment to our patients and communities and are a testament to our exceptional medical staff and employees who uphold standards for high-quality care every day. We applaud their consistent efforts and unwavering dedication to providing outstanding care to all we serve.”

PIH Health Good Samaritan Hospital Wins Best Hospital and Best Place to Work

In August 2022, PIH Health Good Samaritan Hospital was selected as Best Hospital and Best Place to Work in Los Angeles Downtown News’ Best of Downtown 2022 survey. This is the 23rd year the hospital has received the Best Hospital distinction, and the third year for Best Place to Work. The Best of Downtown online survey, conducted in June, asked readers to choose the best in 98 categories and received a total of 24,568 votes. PIH Health is grateful for the contributions and support of its physicians and staff. Their commitment to excellence is what continues to distinguish our clinical programs.

PIH Health Recognized at Los Angeles Business Journal’s Healthcare Leadership Awards

In August 2022, PIH Health Home Health was selected as the winner of the Best Home Care Program category in the Los Angeles Business Journal’s 2022 Healthcare Leadership Awards. Chico Manning was also a finalist in the Healthcare System Executive of the Year category in recognition of his tremendous work overseeing PIH Health’s enterprise supply chain throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. The annual event presented awards to individuals and organizations in the healthcare industry that are making a difference. Shelly Necke MSN RN, vice president of Post-Acute Care Services, accepted the award on behalf of PIH Health Home Health during the virtual awards ceremony on August 25, 2022.

PIH Health Earns Great Place to Work® Certification for Fourth Consecutive Year

At the end of September 2022, PIH Health once again became Great Place to Work-Certified™. Using validated employee feedback gathered with Great Place to Work’s rigorous, data-driven methodology, certification confirms that a minimum of seven out of 10 employees have a consistently positive experience. This is the fourth consecutive year that PIH Health garnered this honor, and the fifth year that we’ve selected an external organization called Great Place to Work® to conduct the survey and analyze the results. We care about our employees and continuously strive to provide an ideal workplace for them. We will use the information gained from the survey to help us build an even stronger organizational culture that will lead to enhancements in the workplace and better care for our patients.

PIH Health Physicians Recognitions

PIH Health Physicians Recognized by the Integrated Healthcare Association (IHA)

In November 2021, PIH Health Physicians earned the 2021 Excellence in Healthcare Award from the Integrated Healthcare Association (IHA) based on their measurement year 2020 performance in IHA’s Align. Measure. Perform. (AMP) Commercial HMO Program. The Excellence in Healthcare Award represents the highest level of achievement, recognizing provider organizations that achieved strong quality results while effectively managing costs. This is the fifth year PIH Health Physicians has received this honor. The recognition represents the dedication of the doctors, advance practice professionals, nurses, staff, leadership team and Board members who provide our community with high-quality healthcare.

In February 2022, PIH Health Physicians was also recognized as a 4.5-star provider organization by the IHA for its performance in the Align. Measure. Perform. (AMP) Medicare Advantage program for measurement year (MY) 2020. This is the third consecutive year PHP has received this distinction. The 4.5-star designation recognizes a high level of Medicare Advantage quality achievement. To earn this recognition, a provider organization must achieve an overall star rating of 4.5 across all clinical quality measures reported by IHA. Only 49 of 169 (29%) participating provider organizations achieved this performance level in MY 2020.

“These recognitions reaffirm the dedication of all our PIH Health Physicians’ doctors, advanced practice professionals, nurses, staff, leadership team and Board members to providing our community with high-quality healthcare,” says Andrew Zwers, PIH Health Physicians president. “We are honored to once again receive these distinctions which embody our continued commitment to providing PIH Health patients with outstanding healthcare while maintaining the highest standards.”

Expansion of Services in Los Angeles

House Ear Clinic Joins PIH Health

In December 2021, PIH Health entered a professional services agreement (PSA) with nationally recognized House Ear Clinic, now known as PIH Health House Clinic.

At the time, PIH Health Physicians President Andrew Zwers said, “PIH Health is pleased to be able to bring the expertise of House Clinic to our network. Today marks a significant milestone in our history as we welcome seven of the group’s healthcare providers, as well as their patients, to PIH Health Physicians. I am very excited for this new chapter of growth and development for our organization.”

The House Clinic consists of an elite team of audiologists, otolaryngologists, neurotologists and neurosurgeons who are leaders in treating the causes of hearing, balance and skull-base disorders with advanced practices and procedures. PIH Health patients now have access to expanded treatment options for a variety of ear-related disorders such as Meniere’s disease, acoustic neuromas, skull-base tumors, neurofibromatosis, and other complex neurological and neurosurgical disorders.

For the convenience of our patients, House Clinic services have been consolidated in the PIH Health Wilshire Medical Office Building, North Tower at 1245 Wilshire Boulevard, Los Angeles. Plans for further consolidation of House Clinic services to a single floor in the same building are in place for early 2023.

New Urgent Care Center Opens in Downtown Los Angeles

In May 2022, PIH Health opened its seventh urgent care location. The newest urgent care center is located in the Westlake area just west of downtown Los Angeles, near PIH Health Good Samaritan Hospital at 2200 West 3rd Street, Suite 120, Los Angeles, CA 90057. The facility features more than 3,800 square feet of space and seven large exam rooms. Eight physicians staff the new center and the team can provide care in English, Spanish and Korean. Services include x-ray, lab testing, and rapid and PCR COVID-19 testing. Our newest urgent care center in Los Angeles is a state-of-the-art facility designed to meet the medical needs of local residents as well as people who work in the area. There is a tremendous need for more urgent care centers and medical services in the downtown Los Angeles area, and PIH Health continues to work towards meeting the unique needs of that community.

Innovation and Technology Updates at PIH Health

The Latest Da Vinci Surgical System Now at PIH Health

In April 2022, Dr. Gerald Yoon performed the first robotic urology procedure at PIH Health Whittier Hospital using the latest Da Vinci Surgical System. The Da Vinci Xi enables PIH Health surgeons the ability to offer minimally invasive robotic assisted surgery options for urology and other specialties including gynecology and colorectal surgery. The Da Vinci Surgical System enhances patient care by reducing pain, blood loss, the risk of infections or complications, scarring and hospital stays, and enabling a faster return to normal activities. We are excited to invest in the latest technological advancements so that we can continue to provide high-quality healthcare for our patients and the communities we serve.

Technology Integration Launch at PIH Health Good Samaritan Hospital

On June 11, 2022, the Technology Integration project at PIH Health Good Samaritan Hospital was launched—a pinnacle point in a multifaceted three-year technology integration plan put into motion after PIH Health acquired Good Samaritan Hospital in December 2019. This project was a significant steppingstone in unifying our newest Los Angeles-based hospital to the PIH Health network and was the product of countless hours of comprehensive planning, rigorous execution, and unwavering dedication from the Information Solutions (IS) team. Integration efforts included upgrading the existing technology infrastructure at PIH Health Good Samaritan Hospital and aligning its medical software systems to those used across the rest of PIH Health.

As PIH Health Good Samaritan Hospital end users embrace changes in workflow, IS teams continue to provide comprehensive training on the software conversion. The complete integration of PIH Health Good Samaritan Hospital has led to the enhanced coordination of care across the PIH Health network—improving safety, quality and efficiency.

PIH Health Good Samaritan Hospital First in LA to Use Next-Generation Evolut™ FX TAVR System

PIH Health Good Samaritan Hospital became the first hospital in Los Angeles to treat patients with the next-generation, self-expanding Evolut FX Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) System, a minimally invasive alternative to open-heart surgical aortic valve replacement for the treatment of symptomatic severe aortic stenosis (ssAS). The first patient was treated on June 29, 2022. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently approved the Evolut FX TAVR system, providing physicians at PIH Health Good Samaritan Hospital another option to treat the growing ssAS patient population.

Tattoo-free and Mark-free Treatment for Oncology Patients

In July 2022, the Radiation Oncology Department at PIH Health Whittier Hospital was recognized by Vision RT for treating their breast and chest wall cases markless and tattooless using AlignRT® Advance SGRT (Surface Guided Radiation Therapy). Drawing marks or permanently marking patients used to be the only option clinicians had to set-up patients to ensure treatment was delivered to a precise location. Vision RT’s AlignRT® Advance SGRT technology eliminates the need for tattoos or additional radiation and has been shown in several studies to be as accurate as either marks or tattoos for positioning patients prior to treatment. Tattooless/markless radiotherapy also greatly helps to lower patient anxiety, in order for cancer patients to focus on rest and healing.

PIH Health Leaders Recognized

PIH Health had the honor of receiving public recognition of some of our extraordinary leaders this past year. We are pleased to acknowledge their guidance, ingenuity and dedication to our organization and patients. Their solid leadership is the cornerstone to our ongoing success, as they bear the responsibility of guiding our healthcare organization through challenging times and making key decisions to help improve our communities.

In March 2022, Peggy Chulack, Chief Administrative Officer; Shelly Necke MSN RN, Vice President, Post-Acute Care Services; Lucinda Place MSN RN, Vice President, Quality Management and Performance Excellence; and Judy Pugach MPH RN, Vice President, Regulatory Affairs, were among the 35 female healthcare leaders chosen by the Los Angeles Business Journal for their list of Women of Influence: Healthcare. All four women were recognized for their exceptional contributions to healthcare and their guidance, ingenuity and dedication have been invaluable to our organization.

At the end of March 2022, Katrina Rodriguez BSN RN, clinical director of PIH Health Whittier Hospital’s general medicine/respiratory unit, was named a Woman of Achievement for the 32nd California Senate District by Senator Bob Archuleta. She was one of 11 women to receive the honor. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Katrina demonstrated commitment to patients and community. Through her exemplary leadership, she spearheaded the primary COVID-19 unit through the last three pandemic surges, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to ensure that patients’ needs are always at the forefront of care.

In April 2022, Rosa Carrero LVN, medical practice manager of PIH Health Downey Promenade and South Gate medical office buildings, was named Woman of the Year - Bellflower for the 58th Assembly District by Assemblywoman Cristina Garcia. Rosa, a Bellflower resident, was one of 11 deserving women to receive recognition from Assemblywoman Garcia for this special honor, each selected from one of the nine cities within the 58th Assembly District. Rosa is an exemplary nurse leader and has shown tremendous leadership and unwavering commitment to PIH Health patients and the community

PIH Health Home Health is Growing

Over the last year, PIH Health has experienced significant growth extending its offerings to the downtown Los Angeles community and further expanding its service area into San Bernardino County. Keeping up with the latest advances in information technology, PIH Health Home Health now offers Remote Patient Monitoring to collect and analyze patient’s physiological data directly from their home. This new program is designed to keep patients safe and out of the hospital. Additionally, PIH Health Home Health has a new option for non-medical in-home care that can be customized to include personal care, light housekeeping, meal preparation, medication reminders, transportation, respite care and companionship, making it easier for people to remain independent in their home.

In an interview with HealthLeaders Online in October 2022, Shelly Necke, vice president of post-acute care services of PIH Health, spoke about the benefits of the post-acute provider being part of a larger health system. “PIH Health Home Health has been providing in-home nursing, therapy, and social services since 1959, so it's something that we know well and know how to do well,” she said. “Being part of a large health system affords us the opportunity to have the connections and resources that we need to be able to have efficient workflows and systems out in the field.”

Community Benefit

Stepping into Health and Wellness

Community Benefit

PIH Health’s community benefit programs strive to improve the overall health or our communities. We place great emphasis on identifying and addressing the most significant health needs of the communities we serve to understand where our efforts can make the most impact.

At the end of the fiscal year, we released our 2022 Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) reports. Every three years, PIH Health assesses the health status of our communities and produces separate reports for PIH Health Downey Hospital, PIH Health Good Samaritan Hospital and PIH Health Whittier Hospital primary service areas. Featuring data, maps, infographics and community input on a variety of topics including social determinants of health, chronic disease and leading causes of death, these reports help identify significant health needs in our primary service areas, serve as the basis for our community health improvement efforts, and guide our strategic partnerships.

Strengthening and enriching these partnerships over the past year, PIH Health has continued to invest and support local organizations and initiatives that service and help to empower our surrounding communities. Our resources were needed most to address rising rates of housing and food insecurity as well as youth mental health needs.

Our employees answered the call to help the community and generously participated in an adopt-a-family holiday gift distribution for more than 200 families in need served by The Whole Child. This year, PIH Health also sponsored an additional 100 toys for CultivaLA’s annual Winter Wonderland event held adjacent to PIH Health Good Samaritan Hospital. PIH Health employees and volunteers also played a big role in helping students in the service area return to the classroom prepared and ready to learn for the 2022-2023 school year. A total donation of 300 backpacks and school supplies were distributed at a local Back to School Giveaway event hosted by our community partner Helpline Youth Counseling.

Our collective commitment to community health improvement remains strong and we are proud to share that, for FY 2022, our total community benefit investment was $174,269,222. PIH Health’s Community Benefit Annual Report details the programs behind these investments that are essential to providing healthcare for those most in need, including medical financial assistance, health professions student training, research and more.

Through our community benefit initiatives, we hope our contributions and efforts are stepping stones toward greater health and wellness for the diverse communities we serve.

Our Community Benefit Investment in FY22

PIH HEALTH FOUNDATION

Partnering to Enhance the Health of Our Community

PIH Health Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with the sole mission of raising funds through philanthropy to benefit PIH Health and its affiliates, including PIH Health Downey Hospital, PIH Health Good Samaritan Hospital and PIH Health Whittier Hospital. Funds raised by PIH Health Foundation benefit the communities PIH Health serves through quality healthcare and health-based programs and services.

In fiscal year 21-22, $6.2 million was raised in support of PIH Heath’s mission of providing outstanding care for our patients and our community. This past year, we were happy to resume some of our in person events, and the community responded with enthusiastic support of PIH Health with donations that came in a variety of ways.

The 2021 Frank Scott Pro/Am Golf Tournament made its return to Friendly Hills Country Club in December 2021. Community members and loyal supporters turned out to participate—raising over $330,000 to support a Da Vinci surgical system. PIH Health is fortunate to have such a high level of participation and generous donors that make our events so successful.

In June 2022, Circle of Excellence (COE) members gathered for a special in person event at Los Coyotes Country Club in the city of Buena Park, California, for the first time since going virtual during the pandemic. Attendees heard from PIH Health Orthopedic Surgeons Andrew Luu MD and Andrew Hsiao MD on the latest surgical and non-surgical options for joint pain. There was also a fascinating demonstration of the Robotic Surgical Assistant or ROSA, an innovative technology tool that allows surgeons to plan for and carry out personalized knee replacement surgeries based upon patients’ individual needs.

The generosity of all our donors continues to help PIH Health stay up-to-date with the latest medical technologies in order to deliver a high quality of care that patients expect. As always, we thank our tremendous donors for their generous support and for supporting our lifesaving mission. They are an integral part of the care we provide to the community.

In Memoriam

It is with deep sadness and a sense of loss that we honor important members of our community who passed away during the last year.

George B. Stoneman MD

George Beattie Stoneman MD passed away peacefully on August 27, 2021 at PIH Health Good Samaritan Hospital, the same hospital where he was born on February 18, 1940, and where he spent almost four decades practicing medicine, mentoring, and advocating for the hospital's patients and staff. He was the great grandson of George Stoneman, the Governor of California when Good Samaritan Hospital was founded in 1885.

Dr. Stoneman attended Stanford University as an undergraduate, followed by USC Medical School, where he earned his medical degree in 1965. He volunteered for the U.S. Air Force where he served as a flight surgeon stationed in Thailand for a squadron of F-105 pilots. After the Air Force and a residency in Otolaryngology, Dr. Stoneman applied to Good Samaritan for a full-time member of the medical staff. He was accepted in 1972. Over his 35-year career with Good Samaritan, he served as chair of the Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) section, chaired the Credentials Committee, was a member of the Medical Executive Committee, and served as a trusted ENT specialist to countless loyal patients at Good Samaritan Hospital, St. Vincent Medical Center and Keck Medicine of USC.

Dr. Stoneman retired from Good Samaritan in 2010, but remained an avid supporter. He was dedicated to philanthropy, and for many decades he generously supported mentoring and fundraising for Keck School of Medicine at USC and PIH Health Good Samaritan Hospital. Dr. Stoneman was a loyal supporter of many organizations, including the LA Zoo, several botanical gardens, and the U.S. Adaptive Recreational Center in Big Bear Lake. He married his wife and lifelong adventure partner Laurie Pallette in 1968, and they recently celebrated their 53rd anniversary.

At Good Samaritan Hospital, they have supported cardiology, palliative care, the Cancer Fund, the restoration of the church organ, the medical library, the Good Samaritan history book and the development of the Seaver Outpatient Surgery Center. Their charitable giving beyond Good Samaritan Hospital includes the establishment of the Stoneman Family Global Scholarship at USC Keck School of Medicine.

At the age 81, Dr. Stoneman was still practicing medicine, playing tennis, taking great photos and exploring California on weekend road trips with family. He was the kindest man one could know, adored by his family, respected by his peers and trusted by his patients. Dr. Stoneman was a sincere and soft-spoken man who made a big impact on the people who knew him. He is survived by his devoted wife Laurie, son Josh, daughter Heather and brother Bob.

Stanley H. Wishner MD

Stanley Herman Wishner MD passed away on June 15, 2022. He was an esteemed interventional cardiologist dedicated to providing quality heart care to the greater Los Angeles community, ensuring that patients were treated with accuracy, care and compassion.

Dr. Wishner was born on June 25, 1939 in Czernowitz, Romania as Milo Weinshencker (birth name). He immigrated with his sister and parents (Holocaust survivors Edward and Clara Wishner) to the United States in 1947 under the auspices of the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society. Shortly after their arrival at Ellis Island, the family surname was changed to Wishner, and they settled in Chester, PA.

Dr. Wishner graduated cum laude from Franklin & Marshall College, where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, in 1961, and Harvard Medical School, where he also graduated cum laude, in 1965. He served his internship and residency at New York Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia and later a residency and cardiovascular disease fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital. After serving as a Major in the United States Air Force, at Lackland Air Force Base, TX, Dr. Wishner moved to Los Angeles where he later joined the staff of Good Samaritan Hospital (now PIH Health Good Samaritan Hospital) in 1972. Dr. Wishner was instrumental in building the renowned Heart Institute at Good Samaritan Hospital which became a nationally acclaimed center of excellence and was also the director of the Congestive Heart Failure Clinic and the Congestive Heart Failure Center.

A pioneer in the field of Interventional Cardiology, he specialized in diagnosing, monitoring, treating, and aggressively preventing diseases or conditions of the cardiovascular system. For many years, he performed complex revascularization procedures and taught techniques of angioplasty and atherectomy (rotablator) after studying this delicate technique in Japan. Dr. Wishner co-authored many medical research papers and diligently spent weekend hours reading his medical journals and literature to keep abreast of the cutting-edge of all medicine. When he wasn’t practicing medicine he enjoyed photography, music and literature.

Through the medical profession, he met his beloved wife Marianne, his partner in marriage for 36 years. Several years after Marianne’s passing in 2010, he reunited with his high school classmate, Eileen Sellers, who was a compassionate and loving partner to him in his final years. Dr. Wishner is survived by daughter Leigh (Brian) and son Benjamin (Michelle), and granddaughters Abigail and Caitlyn.

Thomas D. Gaarder MD

Thomas Dwight Gaarder MD passed away on April 25, 2022. The youngest of six children, he was born on March 24, 1938 in Leon, Iowa, and was the first person in his family born in a hospital. He spent his early years growing up on a farm in northwestern Missouri.

Dr. Gaarder studied at Graceland University then graduated with a BA from the University of Iowa in 1960. He graduated from the University of Iowa Medical School in 1965. He completed his medical internship, residency, and fellowship with a specialty in internal medicine and cardiology at Los Angeles County University of Southern California. Within days of his arrival in California in 1965, he was treating patients injured during the Watts riots.

He joined the Air Force during the Vietnam War and was stationed as a base doctor at the Ching Chuan Kang Air Base in Taichung, Taiwan. He attained the rank of captain and was honorably discharged in 1971.

In 1981, Dr. Gaarder started a 34-year career practicing interventional cardiology at formerly Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital in Whittier, which would later be known as PIH Health Whittier Hospital. He performed the first cardiac angioplasty at PIH Health Whittier Hospital, and was beloved by a great many of his colleagues, patients, and their families. Altogether, he practiced medicine for over 50 years. Dr. Gaarder is survived by his wife Susan, their sons Chris and Patrick; and two daughters, Dr. Kirsten Gaarder (grandson Leif) and Kelly Lullo, by a previous marriage.

Ronald A. FisCHMAN MD

Ronald Aaron Fischman MD passed away peacefully at home with his family beside him on May 16, 2022, in Brentwood, Los Angeles. Dr. Fischman was born on October 11, 1948, in Brooklyn, New York and grew up in Great Neck, Long Island. He was the co-founder of Southland Renal Medical Group in Southern California, and a leading board-certified nephrologist and internist.

Dr. Fischman earned his Bachelor of Science in chemistry from Columbia University in New York City. Later, he received his medical degree from SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, New York. Dr. Fischman then completed his nephrology training in New York City at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center.

Since 1980, Dr. Fischman led the nephrology and dialysis communities in Southern California in a variety of capacities — he chaired committees at numerous hospitals and hospital systems and worked as an inpatient and outpatient hemodialysis program director. Dr. Fischman also served as a member of the clinical faculty at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in West Carson, California. He also sat on the governing board and worked as chief of staff at Lakewood Regional Medical Center in Lakewood, California.

Dr. Fischman was a fellow of both the American College of Physicians and the American Society of Nephrology. He worked with both DaVita Kidney Care and Fresenius Medical Care as a senior medical director at a number of area dialysis facilities, and also founded several independent physician organizations. When he wasn’t serving patients, Dr. Fischman was a consultant, advising multiple medical groups in Southern California.

Dr. Fischman enjoyed playing golf, traveling and spending quality time with his family and friends. He is survived by his loving family: his wife Corazon (Pangilinan) Fischman, three children, Dr. Michael Fischman (Dr. Tiffany Fischman), Leslie, and Nicole Fischman, and four grandchildren.
